Wing Chun is probably the most popular style of Kung Fu practiced in the West, with many schools and associations all
across Europe and America. This popularity is due, at least in part, to the fact that Wing Chun was the martial arts originally
practiced by the legendary Bruce Lee, although he later went on to study many other styles and to found his own style of Jeet
Kune Do.
Wing Chun today is studied and practiced effectively by people of all sizes, ages, sex and so on, but it was originally
devised by a female martial artist who wanted an art that would allow a smaller and weaker fighter to overcome larger and
stronger opponents. Wing Chun is therefore particularly reccomended as a street self defense style for protection against
thugs who mioght otherwise be able to overpower you.
Wing Chun has a strong emphasis on speed and contains many fast striking combinations. It is a fluid style, open to adaptation
and interpretation, and so may differ from school to school and decade to decade. There is usually an emphasis on close-range
techniques.
