Due to the use of different tones and reflections in Chinese something is often lost when things are translated into English, and often two entirely different Chinese words will have the same English translation. This is the case with Hong, and there are two quite distinct Hong styles which unfortunately have the same name in English. They can be differentiated as the Northern Style Hongquan and the southern shaolin Hongquan (see Hongjiaquan / Southern Hong Kung Fu)
Northern Honquan is a Long Fist Style (see: Taiju Changquan / Long Fist Style Kung Fu). It was Founded by the Shaolin monk Jue Yuan of the Yuan Dynasty. It is named after its two basic sets, the little Hong and the Big Hong.
